Take a walk in Fushimi, Kyoto

Fushimi is famous for Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, the head office of Inari Shrine, but there are many other sightseeing spots. It is a tasteful city of water transportation with abundant nature where you can enjoy walking around the town. It thrived as a castle town during Hideyoshi Toyotomi’s time and was the political base of the shogunate until the early Edo period. And at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, it thrived as a post town, and it was a place where Shishi, anti-shogunate royalists, who actively played an important role changed history.
Fushimi is also famous for japan’s leading brewing company.

fushimi3【Jikkoku Fune Ship & Sanjikkoku Fune Ship】

Jikkoku Fune Ship was a transport ship that traveled between Osaka and Fushimi during the Edo period and carried sake and rice. Sanjikkoku Fune Ship was a passenger ship with a capacity of 28 people which was used by the patriots Shishi as the end of the Edo period. From the boat, you can see the sake brewery and the beautiful historical city with passing through the rows of willow trees along the river.

Jikkoku Fune Ship departs from the river behind Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum. It takes about 50 minutes. You can see the boat platform when you go through the alley from Chushojima station on the Keihan Line.
Sanjikkoku Fune Ship will board from Teradaya beach on the south side river of Teradaya. It takes 40 minutes with a capacity of 30 people.

 

Chokenji Temple, Benzaiten

Chokenji Temple has the characteristic Chinese- style Ryugumon Gate. It is located near the Jikkoku Fune Ship platform. The principal image is Benzaiten, which controls music, fortune, good fortune, wisdom, and longevity. The temple was located in a corner of the former Chushojima red-light district and was considered to be the god of art skill improvement. It is also famous for cherry blossoms spot, and it looks like a cherry blossom tunnel to the main shrine.

Fushimi is known for its good quality water, and Chokenji Temple is the same water vein as the good spring water used for sake.

Japanese Sake brewery : Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum

Fushimi is a famous liquor town in Japan. Gekkeikan uses high-quality groundwater with low iron content, which is suitable for alcohol. In the reference room, you can see the history of Gekkeikan and the sake brewing tools designated as “Cultural Property of Kyoto Prefecture” for each process. It used to be able to sample in the lobby, but now you can only tour.

There was a long line at the shop before it opened. I had a yakitori set meal. The three types of fried chicken had different tastes and were very delicious.

This company is famous for kappa commercials. The Sake brewing process is introduced at Kizakura Memorial Hall. And you can see the old commercials of Kizakura company. If you want to know more about Kappa, please go to the Kappa Gallery. At the shop, you can buy delicious sake manju, Japanese steamed cake, that goes well with sake. It tastes good!

TERADAYA Ryokan

Teradaya is a popular tourist spot in Fushimi where Ryoma Sakamoto fans and history fans never stop to come especially on holidays. Teradaya was an inn for ship passengers near Fushimi Port. Teradaya was the place where Shishi, the patriots, used to stay at the end of the Edo Period. It is known for the site of Teradaya incident and Ryoma attack case. Ryoma attack case is the story that a girl who worked at Teradaya went out of the bath naked and went to inform Ryoma of the danger. Although Ryoma had a finger injury, he was saved his life by her. After that they fell in love and got married.
