UNRYU-IN Temple
Unryu-in Temple is a Special Head Temple of Sennyuji-ha.
The temple is located on the south side of the precincts of Sennyu-ji Temple.
The principal image is Yakushi Nyorai.
You can see the Statue of Daikokuten running in straw sandals.
History of Unryuin Temple
The temple was founded in 1372 as a family temple of Emperor Gokougo by Chikugan Shoko, the first chief priest. In 1389, Ryugeden was built by Emperor Goenyu, the prince of Emperor Gokougo, to promote Nyoho Shakyo sutra.
In the early Edo period, Unryu-in Temple and Ryugeden were annexed, and Emperor Gomizuo rebuilt Ryugeden of sutra hall at the current location of Unryu-in Temple.
The temple was developed by the deep faith of successive imperial families. In the early Meiji era, the Reimeiden Hall, which enshrines the spirits of successive Emperors, was completed.
Unryu-zu (painting of dragon in Clouds)
When you enter the reception, you will see the large Unryu-zu in front of you. When you move left and right and look at it, the length of the dragon’s nose looks strangely different.
Renge Room
In this room, you can see four different views from the four windows of Yukimi Shoji. A cushion is placed in a fixed position so that you can see it in the best position, and you can see camellia, lanterns, autumn leaves, and pine trees like a painting in a frame.
The room of Enlightenment
From The Window of Enlightenment, you can enjoy different scenery depending on the season. In this season, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the autumn leaves, and in the spring, red plums and rhododendron bloom, and it make the room look gorgeous.
You can enjoy the five colors of autumn leaves from the sliding doors in the back of the room. The coloring is beautiful and the gradation is wonderful.
There is a square “delusive window” near the entrance of the other room. If you get lost and look at it, you may find an answer.
Reimeiden Hall and Ryugeden (Important cultural property)
Unryu-in Temple is a separate temple of Sennyu-ji Temple and is closely related to the imperial family. Reimeiden Hall houses the Buddhist mortuary tablets of successive emperors from Emperor Gokougo, Emperor Goenyu and Emperor Gomizuo to Emperor Komei.
The inside of Ryugeden, which is used as a sutra-copying dojo, is very quiet and has an environment where you can concentrate on sutra-copying. The sutra-copying desks donated by Emperor Gomizuo are still in use.
There is the stone lantern donated by Yoshinobu Tokugawa, the 15th shogun of the Edo bakufu, in the garden in front of Ryugeden.
